| SÃO NICOLAU AND SANTO ANTÃO |
|
São Nicolau and Santo Antão, two windward islands, are still authentic for the major part. The landscape varies widely, from a dry and beautifully rough moonlike landscape, to fantastic forests and fertile valleys between the mountains, with altitudes averaging around 900 meters.

![]() Fontainhas on Santo Antão São Nicolau and Santo Antão are very suitable for nice hikes, ranging from easy to fairly tough. Especially Santo Antão requires some hiking experience and sometimes, if you exceed 1000 meters, you will require a guide. São Nicolau is a friendly island, not only as far as the landscape, but also the local population likes to make contact with the tourists without being beggars. Many locals have worked for years on Dutch and German merchant ships so don’t be surprised if, in a primitive remote village, you are welcomed in Dutch or German, and even get invited for a drink or some food. Contrary to Sal and Boavista you will not find any mass-tourism on these islands, but several Capeverdian and good European pensions, and sometimes private accommodation. For our guests we organize inexpensive car tours to fantastic natural scenery, and provide all necessary information for the nicest hikes. |
